I get bogged down in everyday tasks and loose sight of what I really want to be doing. Like, getting out and adventuring with my dogs.
Then, I remember to dream. And start make packing lists. I know that once the packing list writing starts … magic happens!
Some people (me included) believe the “magic” is really our “subconscious”. Writing a packing list tells our subconscious that this trip is important so … make it happen! It’s a amazing how powerful our subconscious really is. Try it!
Our subconscious is a super power. When we (inadvertently or on purpose) tell our subconscious what is important to us, it will work day and night trying to make it happen.
For example, I think it’s fun to watch a car’s odometer roll over to bigger numbers (OK I’m easily amused). But, I hardly ever look at my odometer’s reading. Yet, recently, I happened to glance down at my odometer and noticed it was in the act of turning from 99,999 to 100,000!! How was it that I happened to see it just at the right moment?
Because our senses take in way more information than our conscious can decipher, so our subconscious takes over and only announces the stuff it has been told is important. Like watching big odometer rolls.
How do we (on purpose) tell our subconscious what is important?
Engage the Subconscious with a Packing List
I’ve been meaning to hike with my dogs in the glorious Northwest Olympics where we live. Yet we hardly ever trail hike since we added Zoe to our pack. It’s a crying shame.
Several weeks ago I vaguely considered heading out to the woods with the dogs. So I wrote a packing list for dog hiking essentials. The list was short and simple but neatly done. A few days later a friend commented “we should get out and do something.” Without any conscious thought, the words that came out of my mouth were “let’s take the dogs for a hike.”
BAM! Just like that, we were all on our way to a very pleasant trail hike!
I’m convinced that the hike happened because I had already written a packing list, telling my subconscious that it was important for us.
Bigger Dreams … Need a Packing List
My big dream is to go on a dog road trip around the perimeter of the Lower 48 United States. I have not started a packing list for that trip. But I bet once I get started on the list, even though I have no specific plans for the trip yet, the ball will start rolling and the trip will happen! It will cease to be a vague dream constantly being pushed to the back of my brain.
First, I need to gain a little more dog trip confidence. So I’m making an easier list: one for an ocean-beach outing. I bet an ocean-beach trip will happen really soon!
